Killary Harbour & Kylemore Abbey (Duration 5hours)
Located
in the beautiful scenery in the heart of the Twelve Bens in
Connemara, is home to the Irish Benedictine nuns. The Abbey
was originally built in 1868 by a Manchester business magnate
Mitchell Henry , for his wife Margaret. It design is neo-gothic
and the house displays all the features of that period.
The Benedictine nuns bought the house
in 1920, having fled their convent in Ypres, Belgium in 1914,
where they ran an international boarding school for school
for girls for over 300 years. They re-established the school
here and it is still very much alive today. Today you can
enjoy the "Peace & Tranquility" of Kylemore
Abbey by visiting the Abbey and Gothic Church or the recently
restored Victorian walls garden.
Proceed along the inland road to Oughterard,
Maam Cross - see "Quite Man Cottage" travel along
the "Inagh Valley", see Lough Inagh (salmon fishing)
and the Maamturk Mountains, this scenery is breath taking,
then on to
Kylemore
Abbey an 18th Century Abbey (to day it houses a 2nd level
school) and also a famous Craft shop and restaurant, visit
the Connemara National Park famous for wild deer rare plants
and bog lands, see Benbaun mountain 2983ft. Travel along Killary
Habour (Fjord nine miles long) "deepest in Europe"
then on to "Leenaun Village". See the "Assleagh
Falls" (Famous salmon fishing area). Travel through the
Joyce country (famous for sheep farming) and to Lough Nafooey
and Lough Mask see the country side and lakes from a commanding
view, then onto Cong and "Ashford Castle (1200)"
to day the home of a world renowned hotel, from there we return
to Galway via Headford. |
